CoUNTess Spoiling Illusions since 2008 by Melinda Rackham & Elvis Richardson

CoUNTess is a uniquely Australian project which calls out gender inequity in the artworld with biting humour backed by decades of data. Boldly and insightfully written by Melinda Rackham and Elvis Richardson, CoUNTess: Spoiling Illusions Since 2008 offers insights and actions for change. Statistical analysis alongside cultural and feminist theory chart how the education of artists, the role of galleries and museums, art prizes, magazines, curators, collectors and philanthropists contribute to an artworld where women miss out. From original cheeky anonymous CoUNTess Blog posts to today's collaborative Countess.Report collective interventions, this is vital reading. Designed by Elliot Bryce Foulkes and Maria Smit. Photo: CCrocker.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

A Measured Refusal @
Res Artis Collingwood

In A Measured Refusal, four artists who have undertaken City of Yarra’s Room to Create residency program, unravel the possibilities, problems and intersections found between notions of labour and desire. Andrew Atchison considers the power of “silence” and “withholding” within queer contexts; Elvis Richardson questions the value of art and the role of being an artist today; Zilverster ponders utopian ideas alongside the tedium of labour in corporate life; and Scotty So presents a ceramic vase/urinal-bottle for shared use— an item that considers alternative forms of affection. Collectively the artists present measured gestures of refusal for public display.
Exhibition runs until Oct 30th 2023.
This exhibition has been supported by Yarra City Arts through City of Yarra.
